Hello there! My name is Alexandru Catana and I'm a Game Programmer/Designer/Tester based in London, UK.

As of summer 2023, I have successfully graduated from University of Westminster with a BSc in Computer Game Development. There, I learnt about the ins and outs of game design as well as got familiarized with several programs and engines, such as Unity (C#) and Unreal Engine(C++). For my next career step, I am looking to learn and understand more about the game industry by joining it and actively taking part in it.

Currently, I work part-time at the Black Reliquary LLC as a designer, tester and programmer since 2020. Here, we are working on releasing Black Reliquary, potentially the biggest mod for the Darkest Dungeon game so far, overhauling every aspect of it. In my day to day work, I dedicate much of my time developing, coding or experimenting features that could improve the game while also reading and using game design books as resources.  During my creative process, I enjoy brainstorming any ideas with other designers and find implementable improvements with them during our weekly meetings. For example, regarding the torchlight system in Darkest Dungeon, in the Black Reliquary mod, I came up with the idea that instead of making darkness boost enemy stats we could instead develop some new enemies that could serve as greater threats but with the reward of increased loot. That pushes the players to adapt more since they are facing new enemies which are tougher overall,  but the higher risk yielding greater rewards.

I believe that I have attained great game design knowledge through active interaction with games by paying more attention to the details of the game mechanics during a gameplay, calculating the odds of success or failure of a certain choice, observing various players' reactions and feelings towards certain game designs, following presentations led by game designers, and communicating with other creative friends to develop novel ideas that could be implemented into the game which would facilitate the overall gaming experience.

When I am not developing games or mods, I usually spend my time honing my Adobe Photoshop skills, playing on my own or with others, practice 3D printing, play chess as well as reading books or articles to keep up-to-date with the game industry. Currently, I'm a big fan of RPGs, Rogue-likes, Turn-based combats, Bullet Hells and Indie Games. Some examples include: Persona 4 and 5 , Darkest Dungeon 1 and 2, Rimworld, Broken Ranks, Hollow Knight, Risk of Rain 2, Enter the Gungeon, Slay the Spire, Warframe.

As a more recent development, I have also become passionate about promoting and teaching young students about game design and recent advances in the digital entertainment landscape. In the summer of 2023 I was granted $10,000 by Davis Project for Peace Foundation to run a project on Digital Education for the youth which included 3D printing, Virtual Reality, Robotics.
